  • That due to on-board fires during WWII, the Navy initiated the development of hydraulic fluids that were more fire resistant?

It’s true! In 1943, during World War II, the Navy experienced numerous on-board ship and aircraft disasters which were due to hydraulic line rupture and subsequent ignition of the resulting sprays. This led to the development of a new class of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids known as hydrolubes, or water-glycol hydraulic fluid. In 1947, water-glycol hydraulic fluids were subsequently commercialized, offering improved fire resistance relative to mineral oils.1

Gulf FR Fluid G-200 is a premium diethylene glycol based fire resistant hydraulic fluid developed to provide maximum fire protection in hydraulic systems often found in foundries, steel and aluminum mills. Gulf FR Fluid G-200 has obtained Factory Mutual Approval (FM)* as a less hazardous fluid.

    Performance Features and Benefits:

    • No flash or fire point
    • Foam resistant and shear stable

  • That Ford does not recommend all API CK-4 heavy duty engine oils for their diesel engines?

That’s right! Ford engineers have seen accelerated overhead valve-train wear especially in 6.7L engines with some CK-4 engine oils formulated with less than 1,000ppm phosphorus. As such, Ford’s new WSS-M2C171-F1 oil specification requires a minimum of 1,000ppm phosphorus and specific performance criteria as outlined by Ford.

Ford now recommends engine oils that meet its own OEM oil specification. These high performing oils should be used in all Power Stroke Diesels, especially the 6.7L engines that power the F-250, F-350, and F-450 models because they provides greater engine protection against wear.

We are pleased to report that the following Gulf lubricants meet the latest M2C171-F1 oil specification and are approved by Ford:

    APPROVAL STATUS
Gulf Super Duty Plus 10W-30 (CK-4) Yes
Gulf Super Duty Select SB 10W-30 (CK-4) Yes
Gulf Super Duty Plus 15W-40 (CK-4) Yes
Gulf Super Duty Select SB 15W-40 (CK-4) Yes
Gulf Super Duty Select XSD 15W-40 (CK-4) SFU
Gulf Synthetic Super Duty Plus 5W-40 (CK-4) SFU

Note: Gulf Super Duty Plus 10W-30 and 15W-40 are also OEM approved and meet stringent performance requirements of Cummins CES20086, Detroit Diesel 93K222, Volvo VDS-4.5 and Mack EOS-4.5

    FA-4 Oils
Ford has not approved the use of API FA-4 oils in its vehicles due to the low viscosity nature of these fluids. Ford will only recommend traditional viscosity (high HTHS) 0W-40, 5W-40, 15W-40, 5W-30, 10W-30 and 10W-40 oils in their engines for now. Caterpillar says the new API FA-4 heavy duty engine oils are not allowed in Cat engines. Only Cat-branded lubricants and commercially available lubricants such as Gulf Super Duty Plus that meet API CK-4 with high phosphorous levels are allowed.

  • That General Motors recommends dexos1TM 0W-20 viscosity engine oil for applications originally calling for SAE 5W-20?

That’s right! Although some engines when they were first introduced did require—and clearly posted on the engine oil fill cap— that a SAE 5W-20 be used. However, current testing by GM Powertrain Engineering Department has validated and approved the use of 0W-20 dexos1TM as an acceptable substitute and optional top-off and service fill for these vehicles.

Other things you might want to know about dexos1TM Gen 2 engine oil:

    • So far 254 SAE 5W-30 products are GM licensed, 186 SAE 0W-20 are licensed and only about 25 SAE 5W-20 oils have been licensed as dexos1TM Gen2.
    • SAE 0W-20 viscosity is used to maximize its contribution to fuel economy improvement.
    • Formulated to provide added protection against low speed pre-ignition, LSPI*, which is critical in GM’s small displacement turbocharged engines.
    • New additive chemistry to protect turbocharger from harmful deposits.
    • Only oils displaying the dexos1TM trademark and a registered trademark logo on the front label meet GM stringent oil requirements.
    • Look for the 11 digit GM dexos® license number on the back label for an authorized/approved GM lubricant.

GulfTEC® Full Synthetic dexos1TM Gen 2 Motor Oil exceeds API SN / ILSAC GF-5 requirements for new cars under warranty. Highly recommended for use in gasoline-fueled and flex-fuel passenger cars, light trucks and sport utility vehicles. Fully backward-compatible making it an excellent choice for previous model year GM vehicles.

Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI)* most commonly occurs in smaller displacement engines developed to meet higher fuel economy standards. It is random premature ignition which often occurs under low-speed, high-torque conditions in turbocharged gasoline direct-injected (TGDI) engines and can be more destructive than typical engine knock.

  • That John Deere “303” Tractor Fluid specification has been obsolete for over 45 years?

It’s true! John Deere dropped its original 303 specification in the early 1970s for several reasons; one being that the specification was loosely written around chemistry that included sperm whale oil (SWO). It became illegal to use whale oil as a lubricant in the early 1970s when the Endangered Species Act went into effect.

Despite the fact that John Deere dropped its 303 specification in the early ‘70s, tractor hydraulic fluid (THF) sold as “303” THF is still on the market and is promoted for its cost-saving advantage. It is sold in various retail outlets including farming, automotive and big box stores. It is often displayed with eye catching labels highlighting “green tractors” and often packaged in vibrant bright yellow, 5- gallon pails. And while it’s true 303 type fluids often cost much less than high-performance tractor fluids, these savings can be quickly gobbled up by lower productivity, reduced cold weather performance, increased brake chatter, and potential costly repair bills.

This whole “303” controversy came to light a few years ago when a lawsuit was filed by an individual that claimed the bargain priced “303” fluid purchased from a local farm store was basically defective and formulated with questionable base oils—inadequately additized and labeled with confusing and ambiguous performance claims, which contributed (as claimed by the plaintiff) to significant damage to his equipment. It should be noted that the manufacturer of the equipment in this case clearly specified the use of a Premium John Deere J20C fluid or equivalent.

Food for thought before falling into the “303” trap…

    • Premium Tractor Hydraulic Fluids (THF) are truly unique Fluids that must lubricate the hydraulic system, transmission, differential, final drives, power steering systems, wet brakes, PTOs and hydrostatic drive on tractors, logging, mining and construction equipment (a big task for “bargain” fluids).
    • Look for fluids that clearly state that they meet current fluid specifications and are recommended for use in equipment that specify: John Deere J20C, Case New Holland MAT 3525, Kubota UDT, Massey Ferguson M-1145, Dension HF-0 or other OEM specifications outlined in owner’s manual.
    • Ask to see a Product Data Sheet on the fluid. A top quality THF that claims John Deere J20C performance will meet the following typical specifications: Viscosity 9.1cSt min. @ 100°C, Brookfield Viscosity @-35°C <70,000cP (a lower number is better), Pour Point -33°F max., (a lower number is better), the Viscosity Index (VI) should be 130 minimum (a higher number is better).
    • If you have equipment manufactured after 1970 be sure to look for a premium THF that is formulated to meet current OEM specifications to ensure peak operating performance. Gulf Universal Tractor Fluid #331953 and Gulf Synthetic All Season Tractor Fluid #331970 have proven performance and will deliver outstanding reliability.
